Wednesday night I was sitting at home working on a new video when I got a call from local hip hop artist DLO (Dumate, Ice Mantis). He said he had a friend here in town that was trying to enter an online scratch battle but his webcam wasn’t working. Could I help him out before April 30th?
It turns out the online Scratch battle was the WTK Worldwide Scratch Battle 2010 and the friend was David Espie, aka Newsense.
Never heard of him? I hadn’t either. But after filming his 1 minute, 30 second improvised entry to this years WTK Battle, Newsense is a name I won’t soon forget.
First off, Newsense is a real stand up guy. I showed up with my equipment and he welcomed me into his home like we were old friends. He was very understanding when a lack of adapters prevented us from taking audio from his mixer into the camera and had to use an external mic to pick up the performance.
All the technical crap was soon forgotten however, once he started showing me what he was thinking of doing for the battle.
In short, I was blown away.
This guy made scratching look so effortless it made me feel like scratching was just a natural thing anybody should be able to do, like talking. Then he let me try out his turntables and gave me a quick lesson on technique.
Ha! I think I better stick to my guitar for now :)
