Equal parts ode to nature as it is a revelry of adventure, Sonntag’s In Paths Too Dark For Seeing has the feeling of an American pastoral on a grand scale. Orchestrated by Wisconsin filmmaker/songwriter Zach Johnston with the accompaniment of some of Baraboo, WI’s finest musicians, In Paths… conveys the mixed feelings of joy and [...]

My fellow Madison, WI lens-slinger Aasian Andy has kicked off a new Youtube channel for his local Hip Hop video series “Definition of Bars”. It’s pretty simple: Local artists spit a single verse on camera wherever Andy happens to meet up with them. Might be at a party, local clothing store, etc.
Andy has been [...]
When Madison, Wisconsin’s rock trio The Nod split during the summer of 2011, lead singer Brett Newski went through the uncomfortable re-adjustments that follow any sort of break up. Then 24-years-old and working as a copywriter at an ad agency, Newski spent his non-working hours searching for ways to fill [...]
I’m a comic book geek and a Hip Hop fan, so I’m not sure how the dopeness that is Adam WarRock eluded me for so long. Basically, he raps about superheros and other awesome geekery. While that might sound strange in theory, it works incredibly well due to his outstanding rhymes and beats.
I finally [...]
Everyone from the Madison area has heard by now that an otherwise peaceful Hip Hop event was ruined by some idiot with a gun at the High Noon Saloon a few weeks ago.
Despite the incident, the High Noon is keeping a cool head, recognizing that the problem is not necessarily Hip Hop in general.
DJ Pain 1 has released a new series of videos giving practical advice to Artists and Producers looking to promote and distribute their music online.
I’ve just watched the first three, and I think they hit home a few really good points that musicians can use to their advantage.
Check out parts 1 & [...]
One of the most impressive artists on my radar over the last year is Astronautalis, a wordsmith of the highest caliber that I first caught wind of at SXSW 2011 in Austin. His unique blend of well crafted lyrics and melodies, Tom Waits-like grit, real Hip Hop sensibility and a damn good backing band put [...]
Another great song from The American Dead out of Madison, WI. A bit different from much of their material, Ain’t It Strange has more of a pop punk feel with a bit of Country influence.
Most of the songs I’ve heard from them are the opposite, Country with a punk rock edge.
Here’s another great song from Madison based singer-songwriter Katie Scullin, who I filmed performing in her home with her sometimes co-performer Lenti Amanda. This one’s called “Set Me Ablaze”. It’s a driving fast-paced tune that’s just begging for a full arrangement.
Hopefully we’ll see that happen at some point soon, Katie’s talent and skill set [...]
The American Dead are an Alt-Country band from Madison, WI with plenty of whiskey soaked twang and punk-tinged style. Their songs are a ton of fun and they consistently put on a hell of a show.
That being said, I’ve had this performance trapped in the archive for a few months now. They played with [...]
